Our Story
In Loving Memory of Oscar Alferez Jr.
In Loving Memory of Oscar Alferez Jr.
Oscar’s Table was created in loving memory of my dad, Oscar Alferez Jr.
Losing my dad changed my life and taught me something I never fully understood until I experienced it myself: when someone dies, the people who loved them don’t get to simply grieve.
There are phone calls to make. A funeral or celebration of life to plan. People to feed. Money to raise. Family and friends arriving. Tables to set up. Food to organize. A room full of people to care for—and when everyone leaves, everything still has to be cleaned up.
Our family experienced all of it.
My dad was incredibly loved. After we lost him, our family, friends, and community came together in an incredible way, helping us give him the funeral and celebration of life he deserved. I will forever be grateful for the love, generosity, and support that surrounded our family during such a devastating time.
But I also remember how overwhelming it was.
I remember grieving my dad while still having to think about what everyone would eat, how everything would come together, what needed to be done next, and how we were going to make it all happen.
That experience left something with me:
A grieving family should not have to worry about taking care of everyone else. Someone should be taking care of them.
That became the heart behind Oscar’s Table.
We cannot take away a family’s grief. But we can help carry some of the responsibilities surrounding it.
Through Oscar’s Table, my hope is to turn the love that surrounded our family after losing my dad into love given to another family when they need it most.
May the love shown to our family continue at someone else’s table.
